According to Health.Org, it is estimated that 42 million people are living with HIV and AIDS worldwide and from that 42 million, 3 million will die every year from AIDS-related illnesses. Many people used to, and some still, stereotype AIDS as a type of disease that only affects certain people, but that’s not true, anyone can run the risk of catching it. As such a powerful disease, with no definite cure in sight, doctors everywhere are searching for answers to end this deadly rampage. Doctors like Sy Schlager work endlessly to not only find a cure for AIDS, but to help patients deal with pain-related illnesses. HIV/AIDS takes a major toll on the body and with that needs to come the advancement of pain management.
Dr. Sy Schlager is a former venture head of AIDS/Antiviral Venture at Abbott Laboratories, located in Illinois. As the business head, Sy Schlager worked endlessly to direct all the developmental phases of antiviral products. Schlager even directed the development of HIV Protease Inhibitors, which work to treat and prevent infections caused by HIV. Thus, resulting in improved chances for a longer and healthier life. Additionally, Dr. Sy Schlager led the key marketing support for this antiviral program, as he served as the primary public relations liaison for AIDS activist groups and the media. Schlager was passionate about spreading the word about new HIV/AIDS developments and was constantly working towards the creation of an AIDS free world. Besides working within the HIV/AIDS community, Sy Schlager was also instrumental in directing Phase I-III clinical trials in several therapeutic areas, including anti-infectives (new quinolone compound), anti-hypertensives (renin inhibitor), CNS (novel anti-seizure medication), and anti-inflammatory agents (lipoxygenase inhibitor).
One cannot study the history of AIDS research and development and not include the efforts of Dr. Sy Schlager and his team at Abbott Laboratories. In fact, Schlager should also receive recognition for his efforts to end AIDS discrimination.
